My philosophy of teaching is deeply intertwined with my philosophy of nursing. As a clinical nurse, I work closely with my patients and spend a great deal of time ensuring that their needs are met during our brief time together. My philosophy of teaching is based in learner-centered philosophy, a growing philosophy in nursing education (Barr & Tagg, 1995; Weimer, 2002). In learner-centered programs, each individual’s level of prior knowledge to the course/lesson is valued and utilized for both its strengths and weaknesses to build on the understanding of taught concepts (Billings & Halstead, 2011). Using this philosophy, I recognize the value in student’s personal objectives and work to fulfill those objectives throughout the program.
