In order to teach effectively it is very important to know who my students are and what type of knowledge and experience they have as a group. It is also important to know their goals as learners and what they want to achieve in order to design a curriculum that is appropriate to their needs. I believe that learning takes place when students are confronted with problems or ideas which are beyond their existing knowledge. I also believe that if the students enjoy the learning process, they will be more interested to get involved and consequently learn better. I try to apply a combined approach in my teaching. First, I apply the lecture method to provide adequate information regarding the topic/content to the students. Secondly, I arrange discussion sessions with the students so that they feel comfortable enough to ask their questions. Thirdly, I also divide the students in the class into small groups in order for them to discuss amongst themselves the various aspects of the topic. I believe that a combination of lectures, class discussions and group discussions can be an effective means to teach the course content. Beside this, I always try to accommodate the questions of the students at any time, not just during class and office hours. I try to make the students comfortable enough so that they will communicate with me. I treat every student with respect and try to know the strengths and weaknesses of each student. In addition to formal teaching, I see great value in bringing in guest speakers, and sharing faculty research with students through scheduled sessions. I also encourage extra-curricular learning opportunities for the students alongside their academic programs. I am continually looking to improve my teaching. I love to read the pedagogical journals, periodicals, books and others electronic materials related to teaching and learning in higher education. For example, I read the Journal of College Teaching, The Teaching Professor, Faculty Focuses, etc. Through reading these journals; I pick up useful ideas to use in my classroom. I also try to attend teaching-oriented workshops in order to improve my teaching skills. Finally, I hope to be able to instill in students a love of learning and to teach that school is more than just exams and grades. I believe that the real value in their education is not found in their grade point average or their resume, but in the knowledge and skills that they take away.
