I strongly identify with teaching and see it as essential to my dual roles as a developing academic and a seasoned clinician. My research work and clinical responsibilities complement each other. The passion I developed earlier in my career for research and teaching led me to pursue advanced degrees, preparing me to conduct independent scientific investigations and mentor students in physiotherapy and rehabilitation science. The enthusiasm of my own professors and mentors inspired my keen interest in teaching, and I aim to follow in their footsteps.
I believe in experiential learning to help students reach their full potential and apply their knowledge to real-life problems. For example, using real clinical scenarios to teach in classrooms can better prepare students for their future work. My teaching approach combines innovation, passion, and critical analysis, using simulations and thought-provoking activities to engage students and challenge their thinking.
Teaching is a mutual engagement where both the teacher and students have responsibilities. Teachers should create a conducive learning environment, provide necessary knowledge and materials, and motivate students to succeed. In return, students should support their teacher and peers, respect differing opinions, be prepared for class, contribute to discussions, and apply their learning to real-life situations.
I advocate for practical teaching linked to real-world scenarios, which can prepare students for future challenges and build their confidence, self-awareness, and understanding of the world around them. To evaluate my teaching methods, I utilize multiple strategies such as numeric rating, feedback, and maintaining connections with students beyond the classroom through research and clinical mentorship.

My approach to research is deeply rooted in the pragmatist worldview, which places a strong emphasis on addressing real-world problems and devising effective strategies to solve them. This involves careful consideration of various philosophical frameworks, including positivism, post-positivism, social interactionism, and the potential integration of these diverse philosophies. The goal is to thoughtfully select and apply the most suitable philosophical underpinnings to address the specific challenges and complexities encountered in research endeavors.
My primary research focus lies in disability and rehabilitation, with a keen emphasis on measuring quality of life among individuals with disability or those at risk of developing disability. Quality of life is a crucial outcome valued across various disciplines, particularly in rehabilitation sciences. The ultimate aim of rehabilitation therapy, such as physiotherapy, is to enhance functioning and participation, thereby improving the quality of life for people with disability or those at risk. Consequently, the measurement of quality of life plays a pivotal role in evaluating the effectiveness of different rehabilitation interventions.
Rehabilitation science encompasses both basic and applied science related to promoting functioning in individuals and enhancing their interaction with the surrounding environment. The overarching goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the causes and factors influencing disability by generating new knowledge that supports and enables functioning and participation among individuals with disability or those at risk. This is achieved through scientific inquiry to comprehend how the interaction between an individual and their environment impacts their experience and performance, understanding the needs and lived experiences of current or potential rehabilitation service users, developing evidence to enhance the rehabilitation process—including evaluation, intervention, and outcome measurement—and fortifying the rehabilitation workforce, service delivery models, methods, and associated policies.
My research has advanced several facets of rehabilitation science; for example, by delving into the lived experiences of polio survivors and identifying their priorities in life, elucidating how polio-related impairments and environmental context influence the perception of quality of life among polio survivors, identifying appropriate measurement scales for assessing the quality of life among this group, and highlighting the necessity of integrating the measurement of quality of life to evaluate the success of policies aimed at enhancing the well-being of individuals with disability, such as polio survivors.
At present, my research encompasses a diverse range of areas, which include the community reintegration of individuals with spinal cord injury, leveraging telerehabilitation technology to promote physical functioning among stroke survivors, and utilizing dance movement therapy to improve physical functioning and mental health among older adults.
